PROFIBUS®

Process automation with digital fieldbus technology

PROFIBUS® is an international standard for digital communication in industrial automation. Using PROFIBUS® provides:

Flexibility

All PROFIBUS® devices within a PROFIBUS® segment communicate via the same bus cable. Therefore the installation of additional instruments to an existing fieldbus system is very easy with only little electrical installation work.

More information from devices

PROFIBUS® provides unbounded data communication from and to your PROFIBUS® devices. Devices providing several measurement quantities (e.g. mass flow, volume flow and temperature) can communicate them via PROFIBUS® without any additional installation effort. Also device parameters as well as diagnostic information are transmitted via PROFIBUS® simplifying device configuration and forming the base for powerful Asset Management.

Easy commissioning

PROFIBUS® delivers the measured process value in digital form. Therefore the process value is transmitted in high accuracy within the whole measurement range. The scaling of the process value with respect to an analogue signal is omitted. Since the device data are identified by the device address no loop check is necessary.

PROFIBUS® is proven in use since more than 15 years. It is the only fieldbus that covers the requirements from factory automation as well as the needs of process automation. Nearly all kind of automation components are nowadays available with PROFIBUS® interface. For the process automation PROFIBUS® provides data communication and power via the same line, optionally in a intrinsically safety manner which makes installation of PROFIBUS® systems very easy.

A PROFIBUS® system consists of one PROFIBUS® master class 1 and several PROFIBUS® slaves providing the input and output data that are permanently transmitted to the master. A master classe 2 can be added to the system for transmission of device parameterization and for Asset Management tasks.

A DP/PA-coupler or a DP/PA-link is a network component that converts the electrical PROFIBUS® signal from RS485 - typically used in the factory automation and in a PROFIBUS® master - to a Manchester Bus Powered (MBP) signal. MBP is the interface that is typically used for field devices in the process automation since it provides power feeding as well as communication via the same bus cable, optionally intrinsically safe. The architecture of a PROFIBUS® system is shown in the figure below.

PROFIBUS International Competence Center

Endress+Hauser Process Solutions AG maintains an excellent, well-equipped PROFIBUS® International Competence Center (PICC) in Reinach, Switzerland. This provides the know-how required for reliable fieldbus operation. Officially accredited by the PROFIBUS® International (PI), its task is to perform system integration tests for process automation.

Interoperability tests comprise system tests in a multi-vendor environment with a defined PROFIBUS® interface.

Prior to releasing any device or system, it must pass a series of individual system tests. To this end, the Fieldbus Laboratory is equipped with process control systems, PLCs and Asset Management Systems from various manufacturers. This ensures that Endress+Hauser devices are fit for real fieldbus conditions.

Interoperability tests prove that Endress+Hauser devices are fit for real fieldbus conditions. They comprise system tests in a multi-vendor environment.
Interchangeability tests ensure that an Endress+Hauser device can be used as a replacement for a failed third-party device.
System integration ensures that users get the best possible performance from Endress+Hauser devices operating in third-party systems, e.g. in Siemens PDM.

All Endress+Hauser devices must pass these rigorous tests before they can be placed on the market.

Take a Virtual Tour through our Fieldbus Test and Competence Center "System World"  at Endress+Hauser Process Solutions AG, Reinach (Switzerland).
