Measuring hydrogen quality in real time
Enapter uses optical analytical measurement technology from Endress+Hauser to determine the purity of hydrogen
In the production of hydrogen, its purity must be measured with high precision. The measurement is carried out indirectly by measuring its contamination with trace moisture and trace oxygen, which are only present in the medium in the ppm range - a challenging task for the process measurement technology used.
The results
-
Jointly developed solution enables the required purity (industrial gas quality) to be verified
-
Enapter's AEM electrolyzer production now ready for scale-up thanks to proven process efficiency
-
All devices meet the highest safety standards and specific requirements (e.g. pressure transmitters with gold-plating to avoid permeation)
The challenge
Measuring the purity of the produced hydrogen is a challenging task. To ensure optimal process efficiency, the measurement of traces of moisture and oxygen must be carried out reliably and in real time. Enapter was looking for a measurement solution to test the process in their AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) electrolyzers. It was also important to Enapter to find a reliable partner able to support the company beyond gas analysis at all measurement points.
The realization
Enapter opted for a solution from Endress+Hauser for purity measurement. The core of the quality measurement consists of a combined solution with the J22 TDLAS gas analyzer and the OXY5500 oxygen analyzer with joint gas sample conditioning for the determination of trace moisture and trace oxygen. A number of other measuring devices for the pressure, conductivity, temperature and flow parameters were also installed in the test plant to ensure smooth interaction between all components.
